Basic Bathroom Plumbing Information: A Manassas Plumber’s Guide

The plumbing in the bathroom of your home in Manassas is fairly complex. It delivers hot and cold water when you need and is also able to dispose of dirty water in a safe and sanitary way. We put together a quick description of some of the most important parts.

Bathroom Sink

One of the places that we spend a lot of time at is our bathroom sink. There are two places where we see clogs with the bathroom sink.

  • Sink plug – The sink’s plug, also called the pop-up stopper, is the circular metal stopper that plugs the sinks drain when you want to fill the sink with water. The assembly below the stopper can get clogged with hair and soap scum and cause a clog. This assembly can be easily removed, cleaned and replaced.
  • The U-bend – Further down your sinks drain, just below the sink’s bowl, you will notice a u-shaped piece of pipe. This is called the drain trap or the U-bend. The purpose of this bend is to create a water seal that prevents odors and sewer gasses from getting back up the pipes and into your bathroom. Sometimes, this bend can clog or collect debris that can clog.

Toilet

Another major repair that we receive calls for is a clogged toilet. Most people know that they should reach for their toilet plunger when the toilet starts to overflow. But there are a couple other things that you should know about your toilet.

  • Water Shut Off – If your toilet clogs and begins to fill with water, the first thing to do is shut off the water to the toilet. Normally, there is a knob located behind the toilet that you can turn to the off position. This will keep more water from filling the bowl and spilling out onto your bathroom floor.
  • Toilet won’t unclog – If you are having repeated issues with your toilet, or you can’t get the toilet to unclog, the problem could be more serious. There might be a clog or an issue further down the drain line. A professional plumber should always be consulted if this is the case.
